Longines Avigation Watch Review: Errichten eines Erbes

Während die Uhr selbst einige Retro-inspirierte Design-Cues haben kann, ist es sehr viel eine moderne Uhr. Die 44mm Stahl-Gehäuse fühlt sich ziemlich bullig (fast zu diver Proportionen), und die 120g Gewicht auf dem Gurt kaum vergessen, dass die Uhr an Ihrem Handgelenk vorhanden ist. Daher ist dies wahrscheinlich eine Uhr, dass sie beabsichtigt, auf größere Handgelenke werden. Auf meinem 7,25 "eins, war die Lug-to-Lug fast zu groß und ich hatte das Band bis zu seinem kleinsten Loch.

Ich nenne diese nicht als Hits gegen die Uhr, noch ist es eher gut durchgebratenes Kroko-geprägtes Lederband - es ist nur etwas bewusst zu sein, ob Sie kleinere Handgelenke haben und vielleicht dies vermeiden wollen oder größere Handgelenke haben und sind Auf der Suche nach etwas, das zu Ihnen passt. Während es ziemlich einfach ist, in den Bildern auszuwählen, fand ich, dass es wirklich verblasst ganz schön. Mit einer Uhr wie die Longines Avigation tragen Sie wirklich etwas, das eine untertriebene Einfachheit hat. Ballast 1903 Trafalgar Dress GMT

Ballast 1903 watches are inspired by submarines, and the Trafalgar Dress BL-3126-02 GMT is no exception. This is not the most common genre of watch design, and likely for good reason. Translating the design language of submarines to wrist wear is no mean feat. The watch is named for the Trafalgar Class nuclear submarines built in the 1980s and still in service with the British Royal Navy. They are formidable warships, but ugly as sin. Now, I understand is not their fault. These machines were built for function, not beauty. And who knows? They may be extremely attractive to other submarines, just not to me. Ballast has plenty of of models that echo the brute functionality of these undersea machines, but that approach would not do for a dress watch. Remember all the beautiful submarine scenes in Das Boot? Like when Jack sees Rose descend that magnificent carved staircase and ... No wait, that was Titanic. Das Boot was full of sweaty guys jammed into a grimy sardine can. 

Alas, fantasy is always more attractive than reality and the submarine is no exception. In order to place the Ballast Trafalgar Dress in a proper design context, you must forget the unattractive undersea vessals of 20th century fact, and imagine the marvelous machines of 19th century fiction, specifically, the fantastic worlds of Jules Verne.

I have divided it into twenty-four hours, like the Italian clocks, because for me there is neither night nor day, sun nor moon, but only that factitious light that I take with me to the bottom of the sea. Look! Just now, it is ten o'clock in the morning." Captian Nemo, Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea. 

I would like to imagine that the good Captain was discussing something like the Trafalgar Dress. Watch nerds may not find its battery driven ISA 8176 quartz to be as satisfying as a mechanical movement, but they cannot deny the accuracy of this Swiss movement. The BL-3126-02 is a GMT model, so while it has a conventional 12 hour dial, it is also marked for 24 hours like Captian Nemo's clock, with an independent hand to mark the hour in a second time zone. The brushed stainless steel case is 43mm wide, not including the oversize crown. Its bezel rises above the flat sapphire crystal with a polished beveled inner edge, affording an extra measure of protection, and framing the dial with a subtle glint.  The case back is polished and decorated. While the case is quite broad, it is not overly tall (52mm) or thick (11.25mm). The lugs are relatively short in comparison to the broad case. They taper to slim wedges and are positioned only 20mm apart, a design choice that makes the expansive case and dial appear even larger. Water resistance is 100 meters, which will not carry the watch to submarine depths, but is excellent for a dress watch. 

The GMT (Greenwich Mean Time) function displays a second time zone through the use of an independent hour hand. The hand is set by pulling the crown to first position and pushing a button positioned at 2 o'clock. This button is flush with the side of the case, so you must use a tool to depress it. The watch was not shipped with one, so I used a blunt ended pin tool from another watch that uses the same system for setting its complications. With the tool, it was easy. Without it, one might be tempted to use a paper clip or other item with a sharp or pointed end, which could scratch the button or case. I would suggest you choose your GMT button instrument carefully.

Nemo's sub, the Nautilus, featured a grand salon with a pipe organ, huge glass windows, and other luxuriant appointments, and the steampunk details of the Trafalgar Dress would fit far more comfortably into that vessel than the industrial confines of a modern military sub. The black dial is fairly brimming with intricate details. The markers are positioned on the outermost edge of the dial, leaving a large negative space within. This area is laid out asymmetrically, with a small seconds sub dial in the upper right quadrant, branding and text clustered in the upper left, and a three-day date window in the lower left. It seems awkward when described, but it works quite well. Hours are represented by bars, numerals 3/6/9, and the Ballast logo at 12 o'clock, all in applied rose gold on a raised ring. An ornate repeating triangle pattern frames this ring, with a slotted pattern in the center, and the 24 hour markers printed in white on the innermost edge. The bar markers are slotted, and dotted with lume. The hour and minute hands are slender, lume filled batons. The second and GMT hands are also gold, and the GMT is tipped with a red arrowhead. The date is indicated by a rose gold triangle in the same shape at those in the decorative pattern. 

The most striking element is the canteen crown, a hallmark of the Ballast line that finds its way into every model. A hinged arm attached to the lower half of the case holds a signed cap that screws down over the crown. I must confess, I am not a fan of the canteen. It is bulky, entirely unnecessary, and when that huge cover is unscrewed, you are left with only an infinitesimal nub. It is an affectation, but on this watch, that is the point. After all, unduly complicated exposed apparatuses are essential to steampunk fashion. 

The strap is light blue leather with an embossed crocodile skin print. It is 20mm wide, tapering to an 18mm buckle with a long, signed frame through which you tuck the tail. I found it complemented the watch nicely, but 85/125mm it was far too long for my 6.5" wrist, even cinched to the last adjustment hole. For me, a strap swap would be in order; a task made easier by the integrated quick release spring bars. 

The Ballast Trafalgar Dress is an interesting and well executed piece, but I am left wondering if it is really a dress watch. It is larger than most dress watches, and has the decidedly un-dressy canteen crown guard appendage. On the other hand, it features some rather pretty detailing and that slim croc strap. It is thin enough to work under a shirt cuff, but I cannot imagine wearing it with a suit. I suspect the watch is intended for a different demographic than my own. This is not a watch for a middle-aged attorney, but a twenty-something could certainly rock this for a night on the town. Given its unique style, it would be an interesting woman's watch, in which case its oversize proportions would be even more exaggerated, and perhaps to greater effect. If conservative dress watches bore you, if you would rather defy convention, or if you need an appropriate time piece to match your Victorian waistcoat and brass goggles, the Trafalgar Dress GMT might be the watch for you.

Watchbuys Road Show, Washington, DC 2015

Last weekend, I attended the WatchBuys Road Show in Washington, DC and frolicked in a room full of German watches. Ok, maybe "frolicked" overstates it a tad (we are talking about German watches, after all) but it was an enjoyable hour spent in good company with some truly outstanding timepieces.

WatchBuys is an authorized U.S. dealer for several German bands including Sinn, Nomos Glashutte, Hanhart, Junghans, Dornbluth & Son, Jaeger & Benzinger, Jochen Benzinger, Bruno Sohnle Glashutte, Thomas Nichriz, and Stephan Kudoke. Their sales are strictly on-line, but owners Tim and Rob recognize the value of seeing a watch in person and holding it in your hand before you buy, so every year, they take their inventory on the road. You can't buy a watch at these shows, but you can hold them, ask questions, take pictures, and geek out with fellow watch enthusiasts. 

The Road Shows are completely free and terrifically popular, so advance registration is a must. Several sessions are scheduled over a period of two to three days at a comfortable, and private venue like a luxury hotel suite. For security purposes, the location is closely held and revealed only to registered attendees. You will be met in the lobby at the appointed time and escorted to a room with tables full of watchy goodness. The event is friendly, relaxed, and strictly low-key without a hint of sales pressure. 

It is also a good opportunity to meet fellow watch nerds. I had a very nice conversation with Bruce, a gentleman who brought his watch loving wife (Nomos and Alpina), some like-minded friends, and a watch roll full of IWC, Meistersinger, and Glashutte Original. I thought he might be disappointed when I told him The Time Bum sticks to affordable watches, but instead he lit up and we compared the finer points of Seiko as he showed me pictures of his Orange Monster and Recraft. Any guy who keeps pictures of his watches on his phone is definitely one of us. 

I couldn't possibly review every watch at the show, but I snapped pics of some favorites to give you a little taste.

As in prior years, Sinn was the star of the show. The storied tool watch manufacturer occupied an entire conference table at the DC event. Highlights included limited-edition models like the 103 A Sa B automatic with electroplated blue dial. Intriguingly, this watch was created as a result of Road Show feedback. "Sinn has events like this all over the world," said Rob. "People were asking if the 103 could be done in a blue dial, and Sinn heard them." The result was a stunning blue chronograph with champagne sub-dials for $2,230. If you ever see one of these for sale, jump on it. All 200 pieces have sold out.

Another rare item was the 103 St Tachymeter with its distinctive three-way central scale. This outstanding 41mm automatic takes its design cues from vintage racing chronographs, as evidenced by the domed acrylic crystal, perforated rally strap option, and creamy SuperLuminova. The spiral tachymeter allows easy timing of speeds from 20-300 kph (12-186 mph). Not into cars or motorcycles? No worries. The watch will handle boat and aircraft racing as well. It is water resistant to 200 meters, and low-pressure resistant to prevent the crystal from popping at high altitudes. Retail price is $1,650 and only one or two remain.

Dive watch fans had plenty to admire as well. There were several on hand, but my personal favorite was the UX EZM 2 B SDR Hydro. This 44mm bruiser is cased in antimagnetic submarine steel, has a super hard Tegimented steel bezel, and was one of the only quartz models on display. Why quartz? So that you can immerse the movement in oil, of course. Yes, you read that right. The entire case is filled with oil to eliminate glare for safe and easy viewing at any angle or even underwater. The oil bath also has the added benefit of significantly extending battery life. The Hydro sells for $2,310.

For those looking for something a tad more genteel, the Nomos display offered several elegant examples. The Ahoi Atlantik drew me in with its inky "Atlantic blue" lacquered dial and rose gold accents. The oceanic name is more than just a color reference. It is rated for 200 meters and has SuperLuminova hands. Inside, you will find The Nomos Epsilon in-house automatic movement. It sells for $4,060.

Globe-hoppers might prefer the other blue beauty at the table, the Zurich World Timer. For $6,100, you get a stunning galvanized blue dial, rhodium plated hands, and a decorated Nomos DUW 5201 movement with the Nomos Swing System and escapement. 

Hanhart was a new addition to the WatchBuys stable in 2015. They have a couple of classic 40mm 3-hand automatics in the line, but are better known for burly chronographs like the Primus Pilot Desert Sand. This 44mm aviator uses a Valjoux 7750 modified for a bicompax display. The design is thoroughly modern but that arresting red button is a Hanhart hallmark dating back to 1939. It is intended to prevent pilots from accidently resetting the stop time and, I suspect, to help them look badass in the process. Note that Hanhart will make a special visit to the next New York Road Show in December.

The Junghans table offered a fine selection of iconic Max Bill automatics like this little number in silver on a polished Milanese mesh bracelet. The Max Bill watches are true classics of modern design straight out of the Bauhaus school. This Automatic Date is 38mm wide, sensuously domed, and powered by the Junghans J800.1 (a modified ETA 2824). It sells for $990 and to my eye, is one of the most perfect watches made. 

The Road Show offered a few teasers from Jaeger & Benzinger, a new line at WatchBuys that is coming soon. They feature hand guilloched dials and engraved mechanical movements. The black model pictured will sell for $3,870.
